Biopesticides and Biocontrol Agents: A Promising Path for Tackling Cabbage Stem Flea Beetle in Oilseed Rape

In response to the 2013 neonicotinoid seed treatment ban and the rise of pyrethroid resistance in cabbage stem flea beetle (CSFB), Jason Pole’s recent PhD report investigates the efficacy of biopesticides and biocontrol agents in oilseed rape (OSR). With synthetic chemistry alternatives in demand, AHDB research, particularly in cultural control approaches like companion crops, organic amendments, stubble lengths, seed rates, and cultivation intensity, shows progress.

Claire Price’s AHDB-funded PhD project at Harper Adams University takes a unique approach, focusing exclusively on biological solutions. Her findings shed light on the potential of bio-based strategies in tackling CSFB in OSR, emphasizing the need to look beyond conventional chemistry for sustainable and effective pest management in field-grown crops.
