Virgin Islands Government Unveils Major Agricultural Initiatives for 2025
Farmers in the Virgin Islands can look forward to a year of growth and support as the government rolls out a comprehensive plan to strengthen the agriculture and fisheries sectors. Premier Dr. Natalio Wheatley recently announced a series of initiatives during the budget debate, emphasizing the government’s commitment to sustainability, youth engagement, and local food security.
Grants and Resources for Farmers
A key highlight of the Premier’s address was the introduction of grants for farmers. While specific details about the distribution process were not disclosed, Dr. Wheatley expressed gratitude for this new initiative aimed at empowering farmers. “We’re introducing grants for farmers, which we are grateful for,” he stated.
The government has allocated significant resources to support these efforts, including a $1.2 million budget for the development of an Agriculture and Fisheries Complex and the construction of a Farmer’s Reservoir at Paraquita Bay. These projects, led by the Recovery and Development Agency (RDA), are expected to provide essential infrastructure for the sectors.
Advancing Sustainable Agriculture
Dr. Wheatley outlined the government’s vision for agriculture as a sustainable business opportunity, highlighting plans to reduce reliance on imported food and increase access to fresh, healthy produce. He emphasized that training farmers in modern techniques, such as hydroponics and shade houses, is critical to achieving this goal. Support from the OECS Resilient Agriculture project will play a pivotal role in these advancements.
Additionally, the government has begun work on survey plans in Anegada to assign more lots for farming. Similar activities are scheduled for Virgin Gorda, signaling a push for increased agricultural activity across the four major islands.
Youth Engagement Through H.A.R.V.E.S.T.
Recognizing the importance of involving young people in agriculture, the government is prioritizing youth engagement through the H.A.R.V.E.S.T. programme. Designed to provide hands-on training and promote sustainable practices, the initiative aims to inspire young farmers and fishers to view these sectors as viable and rewarding career paths.
“Young farmers and fishers are vital to the future of these sectors,” Dr. Wheatley remarked. The program will focus on practical training and foster a deeper understanding of sustainable agriculture among the younger generation.
Infrastructure and Resource Development
In addition to grants and training, the government plans to enhance agricultural infrastructure. This includes improved irrigation systems, the restoration of wells, and the expansion of land allocated for farming. The Premier emphasized the importance of building learning networks among farmers to share knowledge and best practices, central to boosting agricultural productivity.
A further $831,600 has been allocated to projects under the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change. These include beach and harbor development as well as office upgrades for the Department of Land Registry, ensuring a comprehensive approach to community and environmental development.
